The overall IELTS score is calculated by taking the arithmetic mean of the four section band scores (listening, reading, writing, speaking) and rounding the result to the nearest half band. If the average ends in .25, it is rounded up to the next .5 band; if it ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band. For example, scores of 7.0, 6.5, 6.0, and 7.5 yield an average of 6.75 which rounds to 7.0. This calculator also displays the corresponding skill level description for your overall score, from Expert (band 9) to Non-user (band 1).

Regional Notes

India: IELTS is widely accepted by Indian universities for international admissions and by immigration authorities. Indian students aiming for UK, Canada, or Australia typically need 6.0–7.5. IDP Education and British Council administer tests across all major Indian cities.

United States: Over 3,400 US institutions accept IELTS, including all Ivy League universities. Most undergraduate programs require 6.0–7.0, while graduate programs often require 6.5–7.5. Some programs also require minimum section scores (e.g., no section below 6.0).

United Kingdom: UK universities typically require 6.0–7.5 for undergraduate and 6.5–7.5 for postgraduate programs. The UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) accepts IELTS for visa applications, including the specific IELTS for UKVI test variant.

IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date. The test is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP Education, and Cambridge English, and is accepted by over 11,000 organizations worldwide.
