Age Graded Running

Calculate your age-graded running score using WMA 2023 age factors. Compare race times across ages and genders with performance levels from local to world class.

Calculate your age-graded running performance

About This Calculator

The Age Graded Running Calculator uses the official World Masters Athletics (WMA) 2023 age-grading factors to evaluate your race performance adjusted for your age and gender. Whether you are a recreational runner tracking progress, a masters athlete competing at national events, or a coach benchmarking athlete development, this tool provides an objective score that lets you compare running performances across different ages.

The calculation works by applying a WMA age factor — a decimal value that represents the expected performance decline with age. Your actual finish time is divided by the age factor to produce an age-graded time, which is the equivalent performance for a peak-age (25-30) runner. The age-graded score is the factor expressed as a percentage: higher scores mean better age-adjusted performance. For example, a 55-year-old runner finishing a half marathon in 1:50:00 might achieve an age-graded score of 80% (national class), meaning their performance is close to the best possible for their age.

Performance Levels

100% — World Record: The best possible time for your age and gender. 90%+ — World Class: Elite international level. 80%+ — National Class: Top competitive level. 70%+ — Regional Class: Highly competitive. 60%+ — Local Class: Solid recreational level. Below 60% — Recreational: Normal fitness running.

About WMA Age-Grading

World Masters Athletics (WMA) publishes age-grading tables that are the global standard for comparing athletic performances across age groups. First compiled in 1989 and revised most recently in 2023, these tables are based on statistical analysis of world records and age-group performances for every age from 18 to 100. The tables cover all standard road racing distances and are used by USA Track & Field, Runner's World, and masters athletics organisations worldwide for race scoring, rankings, and performance benchmarking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is age-graded running?

Age-graded running is a method developed by World Masters Athletics (WMA) that adjusts your race time based on your age and gender, allowing fair comparison of running performances across different age groups. It produces a percentage score where 100% equals the world record for your age and gender.

How is the age-graded score calculated?

The age-graded score is calculated using WMA 2023 age factors specific to your age and gender. Your actual race time is divided by the age factor to produce an age-graded time. The score is the age factor expressed as a percentage — a higher percentage means a better performance relative to your age group.

What does a 100% age-graded score mean?

A 100% age-graded score means you ran exactly the world record time for your age and gender. Scores above 90% are considered world class, above 80% national class, above 70% regional class, and above 60% local class.

What distances does this calculator support?

This calculator supports 5 kilometres (5K), 10 kilometres (10K), half marathon (21.1 km), and marathon (42.2 km) distances. These are the most common road racing distances and the WMA publishes age factors for all of them.

What are the WMA age factors?

WMA age factors are decimal values published by World Masters Athletics that represent the performance decline expected with age. A factor of 1.000 represents peak performance (ages 25-30 for both men and women). The factor decreases gradually with age, reaching approximately 0.535 for men and 0.521 for women at age 80.

Can age grading be used for goal setting?

Yes. You can set goals based on age-graded performance levels. For example, target a national class (80%) or regional class (70%) score. The calculator shows what time you would need to achieve a target age-graded score. This is especially useful for masters runners who want to maintain competitive performance as they age.

Is age grading only for older runners?

No. Age grading works for runners of all ages from 18 to 100. Even younger runners can use it to compare their performance against age-adjusted standards. It is particularly valuable for masters athletics (35+) where age-related performance decline becomes more significant.

How often are the WMA age factors updated?

WMA revises the age-grading tables periodically to reflect improvements in world records and changing demographics. Major revisions were published in 1991, 1994, 2006, 2010, 2014, and most recently 2023. This calculator uses the 2023 WMA age factors for road running.
