Traffic density is calculated using the fundamental equation of traffic flow: Flow = Density × Speed. Given any two of these three fundamental characteristics, the third can be derived. The calculator supports two modes. In the Flow and Speed mode, enter the number of vehicles passing a point per hour and the average travel speed. The tool computes the density (vehicles per mile or kilometer) and the headway — the distance between consecutive vehicles. In the Vehicle Count and Road Length mode, count the vehicles occupying a known segment of road and enter the segment length to get density and headway directly.
