Grade Calculator
Calculate your current weighted grade and the score needed on remaining assignments to reach your target letter grade. Free interactive grade calculator with charts and what-if scenarios.
About This Calculator
The Grade Calculator helps students determine their current weighted grade based on completed assignments and exams, then calculates the minimum score needed on remaining work to reach a desired target letter grade. Whether you are in high school, college, or university, this tool gives you a clear picture of where you stand academically.
This calculator uses the standard weighted average formula: your current grade equals the sum of (weight × score/total) for each completed assignment, divided by the total weight sum, multiplied by 100. The needed grade formula is: target percentage minus current grade percentage (adjusted for completed weight), divided by the remaining weight proportion. Results include a bar chart of assignment scores and a doughnut chart of weight distribution.
Regional Notes: Grade scales vary by region and institution. This calculator uses the standard A+ through F letter grade scale common in the US, Canada, and international schools. In India, many institutions use percentage-based grading without letter conversions — you can use the desired grade dropdown to set your target percentage. In the UK, universities use degree classifications (First, 2:1, 2:2, Third) which roughly correspond to 70%+, 60-69%, 50-59%, and 40-49% respectively; select the nearest letter equivalent for your planning.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the needed grade calculated?
The calculator determines the percentage needed on remaining weighted work to reach your target grade. It subtracts your current earned weighted percentage from your desired grade percentage, then divides by the remaining weight proportion.
What if my desired grade is already achieved?
If your current weighted grade already meets or exceeds your desired letter grade, the calculator shows 0% needed on remaining work. You can still aim higher by selecting a more ambitious target grade.
How is weighted grade calculated?
The weighted grade is calculated by multiplying each assignment score percentage by its weight, summing those products, and dividing by the total weight. For example, if Exam 1 is worth 30% with a score of 85/100, it contributes 30 × 0.85 = 25.5 points toward your total.
Can I see what grade I need for different targets?
Yes, the what-if scenarios table shows the percentage needed on remaining work for five different letter grades. This helps you understand how much effort is required for each possible outcome.
What does remaining weight mean?
Remaining weight is the total weight percentage of assignments or exams you have not yet entered. It is calculated as 100% minus the sum of all entered assignment weights. If your assignments already total 100%, there is no remaining weight.
