The calculator uses standard stair design formulas: the number of steps is calculated by dividing total rise by desired riser height and rounding to the nearest whole number, then the actual riser height is adjusted evenly. Total run equals tread run multiplied by the number of effective steps (one fewer for standard mount, all steps for flush mount). Stringer length comes from the Pythagorean theorem: stringer length = √(total run² + stringer height²). The stair angle is derived from the inverse sine of stringer height over stringer length.
