Calculate daily raw dog food portions for the BARF diet

About This Calculator

The Raw Dog Food Calculator helps you determine the correct daily portions for feeding your dog a Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet. Whether you are new to raw feeding or an experienced advocate, this tool calculates the precise amount of muscle meat, edible bone, liver, other organs, vegetables, seeds, and fruits your dog needs based on its ideal body weight and life stage.

The calculator uses the standard BARF diet percentages: adult dogs receive 2–3% of their body weight in raw food daily (we use 2.5% as the default), while puppies need a higher percentage — up to 8% for those under 4 months and around 5% for puppies 4–12 months old. These values are based on recommendations from the Perfectly Rawsome and Empowering Pet Parents for Complete Care (EPOCH) guidelines.

How the formula works

Total daily raw food = dog weight (kg) × feeding percentage × 1000 (to convert to grams). This total is then divided into ingredient categories using the BARF ratio: 70% muscle meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, 5% other organs, 7% vegetables, 2% seeds, and 1% fruits for adult dogs. Puppy ratios differ slightly with more bone and less meat to support growing skeletal development.

Regional notes

India: Raw feeding is less common but growing in popularity. Consult with a veterinary nutritionist for region-specific meat sourcing and safety guidelines. Use metric kilograms and grams.

United States: The BARF diet is widely used among raw feeders. Many commercial raw food suppliers follow similar ratios. Weight can be converted from pounds to kilograms (divide by 2.205).

United Kingdom: Raw feeding is popular with many UK pet owners switching to BARF. The UK Pet Food manufacturers association provides guidelines for safe raw feeding practices.

Always consult your veterinarian before starting a raw food diet, and practice safe meat handling to prevent bacterial contamination.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much raw food should I feed my adult dog daily?

Adult dogs should eat 2–3% of their ideal body weight in raw food daily. Our calculator uses 2.5% as the standard, which means a 20 kg adult dog needs about 500 g of raw food per day split into muscle meat, bone, organs, vegetables, seeds, and fruits.

What is the BARF diet for dogs?

BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. It is a raw feeding model that consists of uncooked muscle meat (70%), edible bone (10%), liver (5%), other organs (5%), vegetables (7%), seeds (2%), and fruits (1%) for adult dogs. The goal is to mimic a natural canine diet.

How much raw food do puppies need compared to adult dogs?

Puppies need proportionally more food than adults because they are growing rapidly. Puppies under 4 months need about 8% of their body weight daily, while puppies 4–12 months need about 5%. Adult dogs need 2–3% of their ideal body weight.

What are the benefits of feeding raw dog food?

Potential benefits include reduced allergies, improved digestion, healthier skin and coat, cleaner teeth, higher energy levels, and better weight management. However, raw feeding also carries risks such as bacterial contamination and nutritional imbalances if not properly formulated.

Is raw dog food safe for my dog?

Raw feeding is controversial. Proponents report health benefits like reduced allergies and improved coat condition, but veterinarians warn about risks of bacterial contamination (Salmonella, E. coli) and nutritional imbalances. Always consult your veterinarian before switching to a raw diet and handle raw meat with proper hygiene.

Can I make my own raw dog food at home?

Yes, you can prepare raw dog food at home by following a balanced recipe like the BARF model. Use our calculator to determine the correct portion sizes for your dog's weight and life stage, then portion out muscle meat, bone, organs, vegetables, seeds, and fruits according to the recommended percentages.

What is the 80/10/10 raw dog food ratio?

The 80/10/10 ratio is a simpler raw feeding model: 80% muscle meat, 10% edible bone, and 10% organs. Half of the organ portion should be liver. Our calculator uses the more detailed BARF model (70/10/5/5/7/2/1) which also includes vegetables, seeds, and fruits for a more balanced nutrient profile.
